We were already planning our 25th anniversary when our 24th started approaching and we had to pick something to do rather quickly. So, our criteria was: Close to home, not too expensive, somewhere we haven't really visited. We chose Waco. It has the Waco Mammoth National Monument, Texas Ranger Museum and Dr Pepper Museum for the husbands and Magnolia Everything for the wives.
This was our first experience with an AirBNB since the first one we reserved canceled on us a couple of years ago. This one (the Romance Retreat) was great. It was out of town, but let's be honest, the suburbs of Waco are pretty much ... Waco.
Trips back and forth to town were twenty minutes or less.
We missed the Mammoth Memorial and Health Camp. Next time.
Our first evening was spent at the Brazos Theatre for Murder on the Vine - a murder mystery dinner. We did not solve the crime, unfortunately, but it was a lot of fun.
The second day was our actual anniversary and we went to The Brazos Landing for lunch which was quite elegant considering it used to be called Buzzard Billy's. Highly recommended.
We spent the afternoon at the Texas Ranger Museum which can take days to see everything.
Our anniversary dinner was at The Brasserie at Hotel 1928 which was a major disappointmnet. It has nothing to do with Fixer Upper other than the TV show, the service was poor and the food was meh.
Next day was Magnolia Day. We had breakfast at Magnolia Table which was very tasty and then it was off to the Silos. I expected store, store, store but while there are a lot of shops, there is also a lot of open spaces to wander.
Dinner was at Rudy's BBQ, which is one of my favorite chains - so another location crossed off the list.
Tuesday, we headed home after stopping for breakfast at Magnolia Table again. We stopped at Slovacek's for sausage and kolaches and headed back to Dallas.
